There are over 300
virtual mobile operators/service providers worldwide, and
new MVNO ventures are being announced with regular frequency.
Operations such as ESPN Mobile in the US,
easymobile in the UK and COTASMóvil
in Bolivia have all launched within the past 12 months.
By leveraging their brands, or by addressing segmented markets
or demographics, MVNOs are challenging operators for subscribers
and margins. For example, Virgin Mobile
accounts for a quarter of T-Mobile UK's
total subscriber base.
Sprint Nextel is managing over 15 MVNO
relationships and several other mobile operators are proving
equally welcoming to MVNO players.
